General Motors Co. is hiring 200 people at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant ahead of it starting production of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu later this summer, a person familiar with the plant’s plans said Thursday.

The workers have already been selected for the jobs and were referred by other people who work for the Detroit automaker, the person said. No other hiring at the plant is planned, the person said…………………………………………….

Detroit-Hamtramck currently employs about 1,200 hourly workers, plus 150 salaried workers.

The Malibu is also built at GM’s Fairfax, Kan. assembly plant.

Plant spokesman Chris Lee said he would not comment on scheduling, other than to say the plant would meet production with demand.

Detroit-Hamtramck builds the extended-range plug-in Chevy Volt and Opel Ampera. It also will build the all-new 2014 Chevy Impala.

Thursday afternoon at Hamtramck Academy, a dream came true for eighth-grader Humaira Newaz.

She wants to attend a top-performing private high school that will prepare her for college, but her family can’t afford it.

A $40,000 scholarship to attend the private high school of her choice has changed everything.

“My heart started beating fast and my hands shaking. I knew I would start crying,” said Humaira…………………………………………….

An honor student serving as student council president at Hamtramck Academy, Humaira won the National Heritage Academies scholarship judged on financial need, community involvement and academic achievement.

“I am so proud of all of my children, and so happy that she can now go to the school of her choice,” said Ahmed Newaz, Humaira’s father.

Hmaira hopes to attend Cranbrook School in the fall.
